Inspiration

eXRBITION is inspired by the amazing spaces that curate and showcase classical art, the famous art galleries that I as an art lover hope to visit eventually

What it does

eXRBITION seeks to give the user the experience of visiting an art gallery for a classical art exhibition within their own privates space via the magic of XR

How it was built

eXRBITION was built using the Interaction SDK, the Mixed Reality Utility Kit, Unsplash api tooling and the Unity game engine, it basically makes an api call to unsplash for image data within a copyright-free classic art image collection, then takes that image data and applies it to a texture which is then showcased on art canvases that instantiate on the walls of the user's space, these canvases can be interacted with to view a full version of the art complete with info about the art piece directly from Unsplash, it also has an Upscaling system that renders the art in reasonably high fidelity when selected

Challenges

Working on eXRBITION came with its own fair share of challenges, first of which was finding a free to use api for art sharing, that could working optimally within Unity, after that data handling and error handling from the site to Unity was also a huge challenge and finally getting the art canvases to be spatially aware enough to properly align themselves with the walls of the space they are in.

Accomplishments

Having eXRBITION work from the conceptualization phase to actually being able to get Unsplash Api to work within the confines of a unity monobehaviour to being able to optimally render textures in high fidelity in XR and also interact with them is everything I wished for when starting out this project and I am glad I was able to accomplish all of it

Learned Experience

How to work with the scene mesh and anchors, how to make api calls within unity and handle image data, also how to render at optimal visual fidelity within Unity in Passthrough even at a distance using mipmaps

What's next for eXRBITION

Bug fixes, a system to give the user more control over what images are curated and shown in the space and hopefully a placement on applab so everyone can get to try it out
