Project Mohiam

Inspiration

Project Mohiam was inspired by an AR classic robo-raid on the Hololens after seeing it online years ago i became enamored with AR started learning game development with Unity in order to build something similar

Goal

In Project Mohiam your goal is to defend your space from alien invaders and their Drones, they can open portals into your space to invade it but fear not you have your trusty blaster to fend them off

Tools Used

Project Mohiam was built in Unity using the Meta Utility Toolkit and Synty lowpoly assets

Challenges Faced

Building Project Mohiam came with a lot of challenges some I was able to overcome others sadly still linger within this version of the experience, a notable challenge was finding a way to always create portals not only on the ceiling but at a reasonable distance from the player, and then having an effect that would make the other side of the portal visible only when it is opened for realism, I was able to overcome this challenge by utilizing the Find Spawn Positions component in MRUK to get random positions on the ceiling the having a custom script to sort by distance from player then picking the farthest points at random to create the portals, then I had to write add a stencil buffer to the portal gameobject to make the part of the ceiling it is on invisible whilst making the skybox visible in order to sell the portal effect.

Accomplishments

An accomplishment I'm most proud of is learning how to make use of the Interaction SDK and MRUK in tandem on a single application, to build something somewhat akin to the Inspiration for this Project, Robo-Raid

Learned Experience

I learned a lot about interaction design for AR and MR and also little tricks to test out mixed reality experiences on the quest in an efficient manner, to reduce the constant strain of wearing and removing your headset
